On the evening of Sunday, July 25, 2010, a group of younger adults were tubing on Long Lake in a style described by eyewitnesses as reckless. The driver of the white Mastercraft speedboat was pulling three large tubes carrying at least four young adults at unusually high speed and taking exceptionally sharp turns. The age of the participants is unknown at this time but witnesses believe they were between 18-22 years of age.
At approximately 8:00 pm, witnesses near the Acker’s Point area told us that the group was “harassing” a family of swans. Those swans included two adults and “infant” swans that were approximately 2-3 months old.
At one point, the driver of the Mastercraft swung on a tight curve and one of the tubers ran over the swans. Two of the infant swans were killed as a result.
The incident was reported to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) by witnesses. An officer from the DNRE did arrive on the scene and filed a report. It is not known if a ticket was issued. It is also not known if alcohol was a factor in the incident.
Whether the driver is a resident of our lake or a visitor is unknown.
We have asked for a copy of the DNRE’s report but have been told it could take some time to receive it. Once we receive the report, we will provide a more detailed update.
If you witness reckless behavior by any boater on Long Lake, be sure to report it to the Barry County Sheriff’s Department by calling 9-1-1 or (269) 948-4801. It is important that you provide the Sheriff’s Department with the boat’s registration number.
The DNRE’s hotline to report violations is (800) 292-7800.
